Susie Carter wins Britain's Best Dish!
In the long awaited final of the ITV competition, it was the British People that chose Susie as the winner in a phone-in vote during the live show.
Susie had a tough time with the judge John Burton Race and Ed Baines in the semi-final when she refused to use foreign olive oil and sugar in her dish. "From the very beginning of the competition I have only used Hampshire ingredients to prove not only that it's possible, but that our producers are the best in the world", said Susie. "Even a small compromise with a pinch of sugar or a splash of oil increases the food miles dramatically, and that wasn't what I wanted. It was a bit of a gamble, but I knew that if I gave in and then got voted out, I would always regret it."
In the final, Susie's Tart was up against the winning main course of Lamb Biryani and winning dessert, Bread & Butter Meringue Flan, and the judges were joined by food writer Sophie Grigson, broadcaster Bill Buckley and former Blur Bassist-turned-cheesemaker, Alex James.
"I am absolutely thrilled to have won and couldn't be more proud of my county!", said Susie after the results were given on Friday evening, "I think the public's support of British ingredients is a sign that we really are starting to value the incredible produce grown in our country. There is a great feeling of optimism about the future of farming today".
